I'm getting the feeling that she's not. I probably need to rewatch "Ability," but it seemed as thought Olivia was an only child at the time she was tested.
Also, her sister is quite normal. And, while I know this isn't really a good point, she seems to be a way for the audience to understand that Olivia is really devoting her life to Fringe investigations.

I, too, got the feeling that Olivia was an only child at the time of testing. Her sister appears to be normal, however, I feel that every time she starts to open up to Olivia about her past with her ex there is something she wants to tell her but doesn't. I wonder if this is something that pertains to the Fringe cases or not. Interesting.

What about the idea that it was Olivia's uncle that subjected her the tests?

Remember in the pilot episode, during her dream sequence, she sees the kayak with the green, green, red dots, the alpha sumbol and the word Zeno in it. She said it was her uncle's kayak. Zeno is somehow connected to ZFT...we see that on the computer monitor in Episode 9 and again in another episode (which I can't remember). Alpha was Esterbrook's lapel pin in Episode 6, and the green and red dots were from Episode 8.

That suggests that Olivia's uncle was working with one or more of these apparent bad guys we have met during the course of the season. Maybe Olivia's family didn't even know she was being experimented on. Just a theory.

In the last episode it shows the other dude who was tested with "Olive"
He was actually using his power for a while, that was creepy.

Could it be at all possible that Olivia was actually adopted and no one knows it yet?
I mean who'd actually let their child undergo testing like that?

Even if she isn't adopted, I doubt it.

REMEMBER HER "FATHER" WAS POSTED THERE IN JACKSONVILLE FL. FOR A REASON AND AS PART OF THE MILITARY OR AIRFORCE OR WHATEVER WHEN THEY ASK YOU FOR SOMETHING THEY ARE USUALLY "TRYING" TO BE NICE UNTIL THEY TURN AROUND AND SAY "I WASNT ASKING THIS TIME , THAT'S AN ORDER" AND WE ALL KNOW THAT ORDERS ARE ... ORDERS... AND YEAH MAYBE SHE WASN'T REALLY HIS TO BEGIN WITH LIKE NOAH AND CLAIR. (HEROES) IF YALL WATCH THE SHOW I THINK THE SITUATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME IF THAT IS THE CASE.

Well I need to rewatch for this! Totally missed this clue/sequence. Do you think Olivia's family was more involved in the experiments than has been told?

What happpened to Olivia's father anyway? did her parents divorce? Is Rachel her full sister or half-sister? They don't really say.

In answer to the thread question, no I don't think Rachel was experimented on. The experiments ran from 1981-83, and while we don't know how old Rachel is, I think she is a few years younger than Olivia. they didn't take babies in the experiments, but 3 year olds.....though I have to check out what the ages were, certainly they had to be old enough to talk. Cortexiphan on a baby gives me the creeps. Bad enough it was on toddlers!!

Why do so many people assume it was Olivia's father that enrolled her in the trials? It may have been her mother, or as someone suggested, her uncle, although I can't imagine either of my parents allowing another relative like that to enroll me in some sort of drug trials.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is all that Olivia has told us: In 1981, when she was three, she was living on a military base in Jacksonville. Assumably, one or both parents were in the military, but it could have been the stepfather even then. Some years later, approximately 1987, her mother was married to an abusive man who was definitely not Olivia's father. Olivia was forced to shoot him. (Was this somehow related to the changes of the cortexiphan trials or was this just her natural strength? "Olive" was always the strong one.") We know she went into the Marines herself for a period of time, but she tells Peter that from the age of 9 she pretty much knew what she wanted to do, i.e., law enforcement. Of course, I'm making the assumption that Olivia is actually doing what she wanted to do now.

Anyway, I do agree that the clue about the uncle is probably not random, but I don't know where it falls into the "Pattern". I also agree that Rachel is probably younger than Olivia--I hope we see her and Ella again! I loved seeing that side of Olivia. I think she was not a cortexiphan test subject, but I wonder if she has anything else that she is hiding? In "Bound", she started to say something and then said it was nothing. What was she going to say/ask? I believe that Olivia and Rachel's mother is dead, because when Rachel found John's ring, she asked: "That isn't Mom's, is it?" Normally, a daughter wouldn't have her mother's engagement ring if the mother was still living, but that is something that is often inherited.

Excellent points, FinChase. I think Olivia's mother is dead, as far as we know. I agree with the rings, a girl seldom gets her mother's rings unless the mother dies. And I did like Rachel and especially Ella, I miss her! I enjoyed seeing Olivia with her also. In Bound, Olivia says her father was at the military base in Jacksonville, when she was three. So we know her father was alive then. By age 9 (I think it's 9) Olivia has stepfather who yes, she shoots. He's still alive in the world, sending her birthday cards every year.

Have no idea about the uncle and The Pattern, that is an interesting point that I didn't even pick up on second viewing!

I went back and listened: You're right; Olivia did say her father was at the military base. I missed that. Yes, she definitely said she was nine when she shot her stepfather; I watched that episode just the other day. I keep wondering if the stepfather will make an appearance one day. The card he sent her on last (?) birthday appeared to have been hand-delivered. That was quite unnerving. Of course, the card only said "Thinking of you", and was unsigned, but based on timing, one is led to believe it was him. Do you find this valuable?

Yes, the eerie music and that it was unsigned - I definitely got the idea that it was from the step-father. I heard somewhere that they might be bringing the stepfather in to an upcoming episode or two. I can't decide if I like this idea or not. Unless the step-father has ties to the Pattern or Massive Dynamic, and that would be very interesting! But as just evil stepdad, I have to say it reminds me more of the movie that came out this fall! I didn't see it, I saw the remake with Lost's own Terry Quinn several years ago, very creepy too but I still don't want it in an episode of Fringe!! YIkes, I just envisioned Terry Quinn joining Fringe after Lost ends later next year, and becoming a mad scientist to rival Walter! that I could go for. I was thinking we must be nearing Olivia's birthday now - or maybe it passed during the World Series, I'm not sure of the exact timing of it. Of course, if they did a creepy episode where he is in her house, and she has a final confrontation with him - nope, that's not Fringe! Maybe he's a shapechanger!! that would be fun/scary......

Anyway, we don't know when Olivia's parents separated (or father is dead?), nor if Rachel is her full sister or half -sister - they share the same mother, we do know that. We don't know when Olivia's mom met the stepfather.

Yes, there's a lot of questions still unanswered there. Hey, I'd like to know where Rachel and Ella are? One moment they are staying with Olivia and the next they are apparently gone. When Peter meets Rachel at the hospital in the season premiere, he says something like "When did you get back?" Did she go back to contest the custody of Ella? It would make sense if she had to do that. A friend of mine spent nearly a year living some place she didn't want to be in order to fight her ex-husband for custody of their kid. But would it kill them to throw in one sentence to that effect? Also, did you notice near the end of "There's More Than One of Everything", that just before Nina calls her to set up the appt in New York, Olivia is sitting on her bed in her apartment, a suitcase beside her, looking rather desolate? What was that about? Where was she going or where had she been? It was already there when Nina called.

Love the idea of Terry Quinn coming onto "Fringe"! That guy is just spooky. Maybe he could be the stepfather!

LOL! I got that Rachel had got back, but you're right, not why, nor where they are now!! Do they have their own place? Are they living in Boston? and YES, I'm not the only one who noticed that suitcase!!! happy dance! I was wondering if she was going on holiday, when the call came. I even pointed out to my husband that she was in sweats! But then Nina called. I want to know where Olivia was going before, and if anyone knew. All the little things on this show - I know they mean something, but occasionally we are left to figure them out for ourselves. and there aren't many clues with this scene, although i think with Broyles, in the scene before, doesn't he mention she should take a holiday? I just watched this episode again on the weekend, I should remember!!

And yes, is Rachel divorced? did she get Ella? I really miss the little moments with Ella.

It seems like Broyles and/or Charlie have been trying to get Olivia to take time off ever since John died, and it doesn't appear she's done it yet. Yes, I miss the Ella scenes a lot. I miss the scenes at her apartment; it seemed to add a lot to her character, like it was her retreat. Did you notice in that one episode when Peter dropped by late at night and again later when Charlie brought Nick Lane's file to her, Olivia never invited either of them in. I thought that a bit odd--usually if they were friends/co-workers you would inviite them in out of courtesy even if you secretly hope they will refuse--but she didn't. The Guardian of the Gate. :)

Yes, I noticed that she never invited them either! The Peter/Olivia part of me was so depressed at that! But I can see that she is guarded, very private, though I keep hoping for this season that we can see them, you know, eating somewhere together. That's why it was so fun to see them talking late at night in her hotel room in Dream Logic and she let him in! thank heavens. but Peter and Walter have never been in her house, and I don't know that she has been to their new house. I keep imagining a Christmas event they could all share - eggnog at least - at one of the two houses! but then I thought, does Walter have any friends left? does Peter only drink at night, or has he met up with old (bad) friends? Does Olivia ever get to go out - remember Dreamscape, when she was going to the party, and then Broyles called her. That's the last time we've seen her going out. That's why it was so good to see her with Rachel and Ella, because we saw another - warmer, I agree very much - side to her, softness and kindness and laughter that she hides when she's in FBI mode. It was nice to see Olivia rounded out! But, like you and I said on the Olivia ability thread, I think she is in shock (like the Anna Torv interview today), and she's grieving another death.

Yes, I remember that scene in "The Dreamscape". It was nice to see that she had another side that dresses up for parties and chats with friends, even though it got spoiled. Must be almost impossible for her to have a social life.

I liked the scene in "Dream Logic" at the hotel when they talked, each in their university t-shirts. I don't know about a Peter/Olivia romance. There's more than a hint of a sibling relationship between the two, and a romance might be very awkward. If the producers do decide to go that way, then I hope they don't drag it out. These are two single, consenting adults, and if they want to be together then there shouldn't be anything stopping them.

Wasn't it great to see Ella on the "August" episode? I was so pleased, and we found out an answer: Rachel and Ella are still staying with Olivia. Loved the scene at the end on the roller coaster, but how ominous were those last lines from the Observers?!
