Subject: Olivia Dunham (investigative abilities, connection to the Pattern)
Written by: M.F. Luder & madamecurie

Olivia Dunham
Although Olivia Dunham is one of the primary characters, after four episodes, we actually know very little about her, excepting her eating cereal with no milk along with a glass of a nice hard liquor. We do know she is intelligent, sensitive, and strong willed. The writers have managed to mix enough of each character trait in her to give us a well-rounded individual whom we can care enough about to follow closely as character arc develops.

Being that we specialize in theories (hence the name of our page) you might be asking yourselves... if we know so little about her, what if anything can we speculate regarding her character? Well shed no tears friends, we can find a theory in anything.

  • Let's start with her intelligence. We know from scenes in multiple episodes that Agent Dunham has what many people call a photographic memory. She has been able to remember and recall very minute details and pieces of information and then be able to put it to use whenever needed. She also has a very unique ability to make seemingly impossible yet completely valid connections between things that would take others a much longer period of time to notice (e.g. her discovery of the Observer in three weeks as opposed to several months like her colleagues). Remember Agent Scott said while laying in Agent Dunhams arms “ask yourself, why did Broyles send you”. He was clearly indicating that her being sent (or chosen) by Broyles was no mere coincidence. We know that Broyles knows much more about the happenings of 'The Pattern' than we have been told so far. It is not too far of a reach to believe he knows SOMETHING about Agent Dunham is special, maybe she has heightened powers of observation and memory, natural or not. Remember, even Nina Sharp implied her skills would be useful, at Massive Dynamic. Nina also said she would be given full use of anything she needed at MD, why would they offer such power to just anyone?

  • Another perplexing idea surrounding Olivia, is her hearing John Scott via phone call and his reappearance to her at the end of Episode 1.04. Was he real or a figment of her imagination? The phone call was static-filled very much like hearing a radio signal. Perhaps the shared dream state in Walter’s lab has not exactly been severed.

More theories in Agent Dunham will be added as we learn more about her.

Theory Published: October 2nd, 2008
Theory confirmed or denied: 1) The theory we published that Olivia's "shared dream state" with Agent Scott was confirmed on 10/14/2008 by Walter Bishop in Episode 5 "Power Hungry" at the end of the episode. At the end of Ep.5 Walter had a conversation with Olivia stating he believed that when she was in the shared dream state, she awoke without completely severing the connection, and she contained his thoughts, memories, emotions and so on.

Your Name: PinkSodaPop Your Comment: I have alot of thoughts swimming around my brain about her, her unknown past, her interactions with Peter, and Walter. I can't help but think there is something mind blowing in her past that will surface in the story in the distant future. I think that some of Olivia's past will be key to understanding the ultimate destination that this story is leading us to. I can't shake the desire to see that she is a bigger part of something along with Peter... much more than any of us expect! --- and no I don't want them to 'hook up' as someone said once... haha! --- Imaginative and wonderful this show is! I enjoy the complexity of these characters...and especially what Agent Dunham brings to this mysterious journey. FRINGE Rocks!
Your Name: PrettiBetti76 Your Comment: I think there is definitely a deeper connection between Peter, Olivia and Walter. I don't think its a coincidence that they are all working together. I believe that Olivia was chosen for this assignment because she may possess intelligence that has been "enhanced" in some way. I also think that Broyles is testing Olivia to see just how deep her skills and intelligence goes. He obviously knew that ignoring her in the beginning would push her to demand to be included which is exactly what he wanted. At times its as if he has trigger words that put her in motion...just a theory! I think was necessary to bring Olivia on board because he or "they" knew of the situation brewing and the possible dormant skills that Olivia possessed. I think it was also intended for Olivia to fall in love with John and for him to tell her he loved her at that time. I would venture to say that John is really a clone...yes I know that's far fetched! Anyway this relates to Olivia because "they" needed something to push Olivia to dig deeper...as they knew she has the capability to do. When John died in her arms, he told her to ask her self why Broyles sent her... Broyles knew she could do it. Many times he commented on quickly she was able uncover clues. He also seemed impressed by her skill and ability as if she was exceeding expectations. On a side note, I don't think John was working for the bad guys, I think he is a "tool" in this great mystery. He flirted with her from the day they met in the meeting...he was placed as her partner for a reason. I'm still trying to figure out why his mom was watching Olivia so closely at the memorial service??? The other thing that really caught my attention was when Olivia told Peter that since the age of 8 she knew she wanted to be a cop...not sure what to do with that comment just yet; it may have had more to do with Peter's response about wanting to be a dinosaur than with Olivia's comment.
