Theories by: M.F. Luder & madamecurie

  • The man we know only as 'the observer', may well be the most intriguing character we have seen introduced to date.
  • After seeing what he is capable of, the observer definitely invokes more than one theory, and quite a few mixed together. Time travel, Biological advancement in the human race, telepathy to name a few.
1. Time travel. It is the easiest of all the theories that are conjured while discussing the observer. We are of the belief that there are now two groups in play when it comes to the pattern. The first (TPG) has been discussed by us in previous theories, a clandestine group who's involvement in the story line may well go hundreds of years back. They are the ones causing the occurrences we see show to show. The next group, the one we assume the observer belongs to, seems to be in a struggle to stop TPG from achieving and finishing the experiments they are conducting. This may well be something that has already happened. We theorize it possible that TPG has already experimented on mankind to the point of no return. The observer may well be the result of years of 'pattern' type experiments done on humans. He has less feeling, less taste, almost no emotion, yet a much higher level of intelligence, and many abilities including telepathy(which we'll get to). There is reason to speculate that in the future there is a group with the purpose of watching and studying TPG in order to maintaining, or re-obtain stability in the future. The POG (Pattern Observation Group) may easily be able to get their hands on technology that gives them the ability to time travel. POG may be sending back members to undo what was done by TPG through history. In which case, this second theory under People and Groups behind the pattern section would be dismissed.

2. Telepathy. We saw two completely different scenarios involving telepathy in episode 1.04. The first was used by John Moseley (the torture guy whose cap having three green dots and one red dot (3G1R) might be rank insignia in the TPG) sent to retrieve the beacon. He though, still needed the assistance of a piece of technology to gain access to the thoughts of his captives. We were introduced to a new type of weapon, which although lends itself to the time travel, just as easily could have been manufactured in the present using schematics from MD or even an old Bishop invention. So we won't jump so far as to say the operative whom we assume is with TPG is from the future. The second, was through the observer. He showed the ability to intercept the thoughts of others as in The Ghost Network. We theorize the basis most likely is the iridium based organo-metallic compound to which Walter explained was the reason the man in the Ghost Network episode was able to listen in. We have concluded this could be a by product the observer has developed through years, maybe generations of experiments done by TPG.

3. Aging, or the lack thereof. It is easily concluded that the observer hasn't aged since at least 1987. We saw him in photo's dating back to then, and he always looked the same. TPG as we know, has the ability to induce a rapid aging compound (as seen in episode 1.02), so in theory after hundreds of years of experiments and testing they have developed the opposite. There may be another theory here, we are developing that as we speak.

4. The Beacon. We don't yet know what POG's relation to the device (which is made of solid iridium, same material in the body used in the Ghost Network), however we have a working hypothesis. We believe the beacon is being used not only to signal a place of importance but also a point in time that is in some way important for POG to achieve its goals in stopping TPG from reaching its end game. The purpose of its drilling through the ground we do not know yet. We believe it is also a conduit for amplified thought projection since it's made of iridium. This theory could explain why Olivia heard John Scott on her phone though she received no phone call. It also appears POG cannot directly interfere with the device possibly because of the way they are related in time, which lends more credence to the theory that they need Walter's help, and also explains why he had Walter hide the Device from TPG instead of doing it himself. They occasionally require the assistance of non-observers.

Your Name: AlyssaLee Your Comment: I believe that the role of "the observer" is to do just that, observe. It seems that he is in charge of making sure all of the pattern instances goes smoothly. His special abilities lead him to be able to do just that...if ya'll have noticed he never intervenes unless it is absolutely necessary. When they retrieved the cylinder... when walter and peter fell into the icy water...but everytime before that he had just been in the backroung watching ex: the cafe. So I think we will be seeing a lot more of this character in the future & I really hope so cause he has to be one of the more interesting ones as you said. Well, those are my thoughts as of now...but who knows, they could change as more comes.
Your Name: Kryptic Knight Your Comment: Is the Observer responsible for maintaining the stream of events (a self fulfilling loop) in some way (perhaps by returning to his native time and comissioning other events in the past) or is he a completely neutral, ambivalent event to the point of his own excision from time.

We could end up getting in to some rather interesting temporal causality discussions here.

Your Name: #1LostFan Your Comment: It should be noted that in Lost, the character Richard Alpert appears to not age. He has appeared 40 years in the past. There have been other references to aging as well in Lost.
Your Name:Pineguy Your Comment: I would think, as an observer, he would want to blend in as much as possible and not stand out. His food order at the diner had the two waitresses staring at him the whole time. It was almost a "Look at me, I'm weird" sort of moment. Also, if he wanted the food hot, why not open the hot sauce bottle and pour it on instead of opening the black pepper and then just squirting the hot sauce on? I also found it funny that such a seemingly advance race would resort to two-way radios or cell phones for communication, i.e. "The package has arrived."
Your Name:Glenstorm Your Comment: Just wanted to bring up two othercuriosities regarding the Observer. The first is his writings in the notebook. I did not recognize the characters he used and he wrote right to left.
Also, I am inclined to think that he is not an angel because of his use of tech. Particularly, the binoculars used to scout out the construction site, which contrast with the old stopwatch he used. This collection of tools suggests time travel.
Your Name: Threewoes Your Comment: I think we are going to find out that the end result of all of Walter Bishop and William Bell's experiments is that they figured out how to transfer one being's conciousness into another being, whether that being was dead or alive. And I think that perhaps the Observer is going to be just one of many Observers created with the purpose of housing conciousness --- possibly even William Bells.
All theories discussed above were written as a collaboration of M.F. Luder and madamecurie, although they may not always agree with each other.

monkeyarchitecture The Observer seen in public? 9 Oct 17 2008, 6:04 PM EDT by Agent_Bristow

Myself & my work associates are big fans of both Lost & Fringe. Fringe is the current watercooler topic.
One of my co-workers said she saw The Observer in the audience during the October 13 Dodgers game. She said she & her husband rewound and they were certain it was him.

Some kind of viral marketing going on with him?? Has he been seen anywhere else in real life?
