FRINGE, EPISODE 2.02
NIGHT OF DESIRABLE OBJECTS RECAP
ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 9.24.2009

LANSDALE, PA:

Construction is being done on a rural road, as a radio plays in the background, reporting that there is still no information on the disappearance of 6 people from the area. One of the workers decides to take a break and walks over to the side of the road near a corn field. He thinks he sees something. He walks slowly into the corn field and sees something blue in the ground. As he gets closer, it appears to be a motionless blue glove or hand in the dirt. Suddenly, it grabs him and sucks him into the ground. A train passes by. His coworker calls for him, “Raymond?”

NEW YORK CITY:

Night of Desirable Objects #5A doctor is removing a bandage from Olivia’s hand. She examines her hand as it quivers. Peter moves to help her retrieve her walking cane. Peter wants to help her, and says, "You’re also no good at letting people help you."

Peter and Olivia get into car in hospital parking lot. Agent Francis is watching them from another car. Peter turns and looks around as if he suspects he is being watched, but he doesn’t spot anything, so he gets in the car.

LANSDALE, PA:

Raymond, the construction worker, awakens to find himself in a cave-like hole, underground. His legs are maimed. He uses his lighter to look around in the dark and sees some human remains. He then sees the jaws of some sort of beast. A creature comes toward him, and Raymond is dragged off by the goblin-like creature.

BOSTON, MA:

Peter is walking with Agent Broyles. Broyles tells him he approved everything that Peter requested, including new housing for Peter and Walter. Peter tells Broyles that he was looking through the FBI files for cases similar to Olivia’s, where people suddenly disappeared. In the last 2 months, 6 people have disappeared, four of whom disappeared into thin air. Broyles asks about Olivia and Peter says she’ll be fine.

HARVARD:

Back at the lab, Astrid and Walter are recreating Olivia’s car accident with model cars and frogs. Agent Dunham walks in. They are taking Polaroid photos of the experiment. However, they are unsuccessful -- no matter what they try, they can’t make the frogs disappear. Walter says science is patience. Astrid interjects and says that it’s also slimy. Walter says he thinks Olivia traveled to another universe, “We assume our universe is the only one, but there are an infinite number of them. In each there is a version of us, slightly different, but based on the accumulation of our choices. “

Olivia acknowledges that she went somewhere and that she met with someone, but the rest is like a dream that she just can’t remember. Walter tells Olivia that she’ll eventually remember over time. He also reflects about Olivia’s death, and says that he doesn’t know what he would’ve done if he had lost her. Walter says Olivia “appears to be fine,” but everything traveling to an alternate universe has its consequences.

LANSDALE, PA:

Walter, Peter and Olivia show up at the construction site to investigate the disappearances. Sheriff Golightly hands Walter a plastic baggie of blue slime.

Night of Desirable Objects #4Back at the sheriff’s office, the sheriff gives them all the files he has on the disappearances. He questions Olivia about the jurisdiction of the FBI and wonders why they are investigating this case. Olivia is distracted by the sound of a fly. Peter picks up some fishing equipment off table and starts a random conversation with Sherriff.

Olivia calls Agent Francis and asks him to check on the missing persons files. Agent Francis has a suspicious cough, and tells her he has to run an errand first.

Agent Francis is seen walking into the pawn shop from the last episode. Still coughing, he goes into the backroom. On the typewriter, Charlie types:

Target trusts me completely
She still believes I’m her partner
Awaiting your instructions

Back at the lab, Peter and Olivia are reviewing the details of files. Walter says the substance from Lansdale is a paralytic, meaning whoever took the people paralyzed them beforehand. The base solution has humane male DNA. Peter goes back to Olivia. She points out that Andre Hughes was near all of the other victims’ families near the time of the disappearances. Peter and Olivia take off.

Back at the cave, a man with a lantern finds construction worker Raymond’s body.

At the Hughes house, Peter and Olivia pull up. They walk up on the porch and peer in the window. Olivia knocks. Hughes, an old guy with a shovel walks up. Olivia and Peter tell him they want to ask him about the people who have gone missing. He says he knows about them and invites them in. Hughes begins to ramble, and asks if either have experience with water wells. He spends most of his time maintaining and digging them out, but wouldn’t wish this sort of work on them. Olivia is distracted and begins looking around as he continues to talk about wells.

Olivia asks if there is someone else in house and Hughes says no. She hears raspy breathing. She tells Peter there is somebody else in house and asks him to keep Hughes busy while she goes up the stairs. As she’s ascending, she hears a door close. She enters a room with her gun drawn. In the room, she finds a chemistry lab set up. She hears something from a closet door. With her gun drawn, she tells the unknown person to come out of the closet. The rasping and snarling continues. Olivia opens the closet door and only finds more chemicals in a shallow closet. Startled by somebody walking in the bedroom door, she shoots instinctively and nearly misses Peter!

Back at FBI headquarters, Olivia shows Hughes photos of people who are missing and asks him to confirm that he’s a retired doctor from 20 years ago. Broyles walks in the observation portion of the room and talks to Peter as they watch Olivia question Hughes.

Olivia asks Hughes about some of the victims’ relatives. We learn that Hughes lost his wife 17 years ago. She and his son died in child birth. Hughes said that for five minutes he had a son. He also says he could never hurt these people. Olivia wants to take a sample of blood and compare it to some from scene at last disappearance. Hughes says no.
Broyles wants Olivia to hold him for 24 hours so he can get a warrant for the blood. He questions Peter about Olivia’s near miss, and Peter calls it a misfire.

Olivia is rechecked by doctor. Asks about short term memory and she jokes, what’s your name? She takes off her robe and we see bruises on her back, right shoulder.

Night of Desirable Objects #6Nina Sharp walks in to see how Olivia is. She tells Olivia that sometimes the physical injuries are the easiest parts to get over. She acknowledges that Olivia has been through quite an ordeal. She gives Olivia a referral to Sam Weiss, the man who “put her back together.” Olivia says she doesn’t need a psychologist. Nina says he’s not one, but when she’s ready, he can help.
At the Hughes home, Agent Jessup is inside with other officers investigating the home. She opens a cabinet and finds a cross and a bible. She takes out the bible and opens it up, finding a newspaper clipping with the headline:

Eveline Hughes and baby die in childbirth, cause unknown

She moves the clipping and finds a note written in the bible, which says, “Andrew - don’t blame yourself, it was god’s will. Your wife and child are with him. Pastor Lisburn.”

Back at lab, Walter wants the bodies of the wife and child dug up.

Night of Desirable Objects #1The bodies are now being excavated.

There is grunting coming from the FBI room, where Hughes has pulled down fluorescent light and is now fooling with it.
The scenes flash back and forth between the grave excavation site, and Hughes, who is biting wires apart with teeth.
They open coffin and find skeleton of the wife.

Hughes is making a noose.

They bring up the baby’s coffin, open it and find nothing! The sheriff says looks like something dug its way in. Olivia says, “Or dug its way out.” In the grave, there is a hole that goes deep underneath.

Hughes is seen hanging from the light fixture.

Back at the federal building in Boston, Olivia exits elevator with another agent. They walk into room and find Hughes hanging and the fluorescent light flickering.

In the lab, Walter is looking at wife’s skeletal remains. Mrs. Hughes has scarring to the joints, butterfly lesions to the face, and an advanced case of systemic lupus erythematosus. Walter says this means that she was incapable of producing offspring. Astrid tells him there was a baby boy. Walter says that this is not possible, as lupus results in an overactive immune system which would’ve destroyed the fetus.

Back at Hughes house, sheriff is putting up caution tape around the house. Something starts to move underneath the poles, unnoticed by the Sheriff.

Back at the FBI building, Olivia tells Broyles that she wants Hughes’ body brought back to lab. During the conversation, we can see that Olivia is still sensitive to hearing; she hears talking and screeching.

At the lab, Walter confirms that the wife did indeed give birth. His report says that the baby was not entirely human, finding traces of scorpion DNA and something that lives underground, like a mole rat. Hughes was experimenting with gene transplants and must have altered the baby so that it could survive the mother’s lupus in the womb.

Olivia walks in. She says she might know where the son is. She says she heard something breathing at the Hughes house, and that he’s either near the house or under it.

Back at the Hughes house, the sheriff is by his car and senses something in the ground. He sees something burrowing underneath toward him. It comes closer and pulls him under. The cornfield is empty.

Peter and Olivia drive up to sheriff’s car at Hughes house. They walk into house and call out for sheriff Golightly. Peter finds black stuff on wall and smears it on the wall. As he does so, he realizes there is something underneath. He tears away wallpaper to find secret door, which leads to a baby’s room. Olivia opens another door and walks in. She calls for Peter and they walk into another room with weird stuff. They find a canine tooth on the ground. Peter digs around on the ground more. He looks into an empty cinder block place in the wall and digs behind. They move some of the wall blocks out of the way and find dog skeletal remains in the wall. Olivia pulls away more of the wall and looks inside. She sees freshly mutilated bodies, including sheriff. Something reaches from the wall, grabs her and pulls her in. Peter goes after her and it goes after Peter, when a big fight scene ensues. Olivia stabs the zombie-like creature with a stick, it stops, and then starts to flee. It is burrowing out of the dirt, when the police car falls in, crushing the beast.

Later outside, Olivia says Hughes realized it was his son; they found traps set in all these holes buried around the property.

In the car with Charlie, Olivia wonders aloud if maybe she doesn’t want to remember where she was. Charlie says something about an alternate universe. Olivia is surprised that he acknowledges another universe.

Back in the lab, Peter says he is getting ready to go fishing and tells story of a 10 year old boy who saved up his money to buy a lure called the Night of Desirable Objects to go fishing with his father. However, the little boy ended up fishing alone on boat because father was always busy. Walter asks if Peter got the lure from his friend, and clearly doesn’t understand that Peter is talking about his childhood. Walter asks if he can come with Peter and his friend. Peter says that this would make the trip.

At Olivia’s home, she is soaking in the bath tub. As bubbles pop, Olivia is clearly sensitive to the noise. She hears voices murmuring, babies crying, flies buzzing, and conversations from around her. The noise increases then silence.
Olivia is now walking outside, with music playing in distance. She is holding the paper she received from Nina Sharp. She is in front of a bowling alley and decides to walk in. One man is bowling and there is a clerk behind the counter. She tells the clerk that she’s looking for Sam Weiss and asks, “Where can I find him?” The clerk answers that he’s in Atlanta, after he met a girl and moved away. Olivia starts to leave. As she turns, the clerk says, “That’s it? You’re giving up?” Olivia realizes that the clerk is Sam Weiss. He tells her that Nina said she’d be coming by. He asks if the headaches have started yet. She says no. Then, he asks her if she’s’ a size 9 and hands her a pair of bowling shoes.

Charlie is in the backroom of the pawnshop, typing again:

Target visited other side but remembers no details.
Please advise.

Typewriter types back:
Unacceptable.
If she can’t remember on her own, then do something to help her.
