UNANSWERED QUESTIONS & PLOT DANGLERS
  • Who is 'the Observer' and why is he at every occurrence of the Pattern?
  • Agent Scott back from the dead? Or just alive in Olivia's mind?
  • Will we see the 'cylinder' again? What is its purpose? Would it have disappeared again in the manner that it came, if it had been left buried in tinfoil? And why couldn't the observer touch it himself? Does Dr. Bishop actually know anything about the cylinder other than having the compulsion placed in his mind to keep it hidden?
  • Why does Peter know what his dad knows without knowing it? Walter told Peter to "adjust the way he views communications". Is this a connection they will keep now that Walter's debt has been paid?
  • The Observer appears ageless. If he's a time traveller from a future then it explains a good deal. That he knows Peter and his Father intimately would then also be explained. But who then is he calling, in the "now"? Is it even a phone?
  • The "assassin" who attempts to get his hands on the cylinder wears a hat embroidered with three green circles and one red one. This symbol was seen once before in the pilot. When Olivia contacts John through their shared dream, she sees her Uncle's kayak. The three green circles and the red circle are on the kayak.
  • No one asks any question about what kind of gun the assassin was using, and what gear did he use to hear people thoughts.

PLOT HOLES, INCONSISTENCIES OR JUST PLAIN IMPOSSIBLE?
Add unbelievable incidents or sci-fi faux pas to this list!
  • Is the photo of the soldier in 1987 a ghastly wardrobe mistake? He's wearing an Army uniform in digital camouflage. In Quantico, Marines are present, in 1987 they wore either BDU - classic or Olive Drab. Digital camo varies - the Army uses a gray base, the Marine version includes black. Digital camo was only recently developed and issued. So the photo is either a gaff, a trumped up lie, or a time travel issue rearing it's head.
  • Continuity- When Dunham realizes she has seen the Observer before, she pulls up the picture from the hospital in Quincy. The bald man is standing at the corner, in front of some sort of wall grate, sign or charts. In the very next scene when she takes it to Broyles, the photo from Quincy she shows him has the Observer standing around the corner in a completely different place. (Might she have had more than one picture from Quincy where the Observer was visible, and she opted to show Broyles a different one from what we saw earlier?)

  • Dr. Bishop, despite spending 17 years far from the real life, can handle computers and other gadgets as if it's a natural thing and suddenly he can't handle a vibrating cellphone. (Dr. Bishop was familiar with earlier computers and that familiarity may have helped him catch on to modern computers more easily - plus, it's not known what, if any, access he had to computers while hospitalized. It is unlikely, though, that a patient in a mental hospital would be given access to a cell phone, and for someone who was only familiar with "traditional" phones and possibly some cordless phones, a cell phone - especially one in vibration mode - would be much more foreign than an up-to-date computer.)

EPISODE'S BEST QUOTES
  • "Do you have jalapenos?" (waitress: "I think he does.") "Eleven of those please... on the side." - The Observer
  • "It has arrived." - The Observer
  • "Well, what kind of man would take off on you the minute a can of magic space soupe appears out of nowhere?" - Peter Bishop
  • "I sure hope that a gigantic metallic suppository is not the pinnacle of human achievement." - Peter Bishop
  • "Open your mind son, or someone may open it for you." - Walter Bishop
  • "Your friend? He's a tall fellow, right? Pink? Big fuzzy ears." - Peter Bishop
  • "Departure on schedule." - The Observer
  • "Apples! Bananas! Rhinoceros! I wanna hold your hand! Lucy in the sky with diamonds!" - Peter Bishop/The Observer
OMG! MOMENTS
  • One of the shots that were fired from the beanie guy who carried a blaster, scared me.

EPISODE TRIVIA
  • The cylinder vibrates at 2MHz then again at 4
  • 7, 18, 6, 22, 7, 9 The number sequence given to dispatch by Agent Olivia Dunham when she calls in to have them trace a phone call to her cell phone.
  • Walter and Peter Bishop were in an accident years ago over Thanksgiving and were saved by 'The Observer'.
  • The tomb stone for Robert Bishop reads August 21, 1912 - December 11, 1944. He would have been 32 years old.
  • The man with the beanie on had a pattern on his hat green green green red that shows up in a later episode.

I'm definitely going to have to see it again because there was a lot to take in. The device was a beacon but for what? Certain events in time? Any thoughts?

I was re-watching "The Arrival" and noticed that the man after the egg, who was shooting everyone with the blaster weapon, had four dots on his beanie: three green, and one red. Has anyone else noticed instances of this pattern in other episodes, in the background?

KidCatalyst Thumbs up on Episode 4 7 Jun 21 2009, 12:26 PM EDT by Jnjn0616

I really just wanted to open up a discussion for those who have been watching. I enjoyed this last episode very much. It was good. I plan to keep on watching. It's finally peaked my interest. Regarding Observer, can't wait to see what he's all about. He definitely brought a new element to the story. Is he some kind of Alien, maybe an Angel or his he a Clone? What was that language he was writing in? I also loved how the writers had to come up with a reason for Peter to stay. The whole mind reading thing blew me away. And the wires up the nose to read thoughts made me think of mummification. Too weird!! Glad to see Olivia's assistant, Arid??? getting more time. Loved how Walter had to drug her out. She's a memorable character. And I thought Walter's place to hide the maching was fantastic... Keep up the clever creativity!
